PERSONAL.

The members of the Sumner Savage Club met ab the Marine Hotel on Saturday night to bid farewell to Savage H. W. Comerford, who is about to leave the colony. The chair was taken by the President, Mr W. Rollitt, and there were about thirty members present. An excellent dinner was provided and a long toast list gone through, 'Mr Comerford's health being enthusiastically honoured. During the evening Savages Hollow, Rickards, H. van Asch, Pratt and Ryan contributed songs, and recitations were given by Savages Stevens and Crawford, the function ending at about 10.30 p.m. Mr Comerford has resigned his position as manager for the firm of Messrs Chrystall and Co. to join the Standard Oil Company at Melbourne. Sir Gilbert Parker and Sir Conan Doyle have sent appreciatory letters to the New Zealand Journalists' Institute, in reply to letters containing a resolution, congratulating them on being knighted. Sergeant Mackay has been called to Wellington on Departmental business. Sergeant Burke will act as Sub-Inspector ab the Christohurch Police Station until the arrival of Sub-Inspector' Dwyer. Lieutenant-Colonel Webb and AdjutantCaptain Hobday have signified their intention of being present at the Garrison ball, to be held «t the Art Gallery on Oct. 9. Sir George Clifford and Captains' H. S. Blackburne and M. Lewin left for Wellington by the s.s. Penguin yesterday.
