SULPHUR SHOWERS.
- TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln Hi© telegraphic new.? published in Thursday's " Times " I observed it stated that quantities of sulphur had fallen during, the late rain storms in several districts in tiie North Island. It seeme to aue that this is probably mi error. At Uliis season of tine year, when the piutisi irisigiius, cupresmis macrocarpa and goveniana are in bloom, they shed immense quantities of sulphurcoloured, pollen which is 'blown about a.r.d accumulates on the surface of pools: during the rain storms.' When the water subsides large dense masses of the. pollen are left on the margins wm the 'bottoms' of the pooh», aind •undoubtedly closely resemble sulphwr. While I write these remarks, the same phenomenon, may ho seen 07i the. streets here. Of coiu-Ee this (may not explain the occurrence-mentioned in. till© telegraphic news referred to, but it is probable it may- do so.—l am, etc., W. W. SMITH. , Ash-burton, Sept. 27, 1.902.
