AUSTRALIAN PERFORMANCES. United Press Association —By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, Sept, 28. Cavill 'beat Billington in a 300yds swimming race at Liverpool. Time—3min 34 3-ssec. Lane swam 150yds in lmin 36 3-ssec. Both times are records. (The amateur record for 300yds was 3min 47 4-ssec, made by F. C. V. Lane, the Australian, at Blackpool, England, on Sept. 11, 1899. On Nov. 18; last year, this time was lowered to 3min 40sec by J. Nuttall, the professional champion of England. The record for 150yds was lmin 58 4-ssec, by J. H. Derbyshire, the English amateur sprint champion.)
The annual meeting of the Christchurchi Amateur Swimming Club was held at the Clareaidon' Hotel last evening. Mr G. Harris (president) occupied the chair, and thera were about twenty members present. The annual report stated that the membership had been well maintained, and the finances were in a very satisfactory condition. The club had taken its part in the race 3 in whichi the Australian swimmers had entered during the season. The admission of a certainnumber of schoolboys to the club free had proved a success. On the whole the yearhad been a satisfactory one. The following officers were elected :—President; Mr G. Harris; vice-presidents, Messrs J. J. lobister, A. Francis, J. M. Watson, J. R. Duncan, T. S. Foster.sen., E. C. Ashby, R. Sneddon'and Drs Moorhouse, Orchard and Thacker; captain, Mr C. H. Fox; deputyoaptain, Mr P. Harvey ; committee, Messrs H. Houat, F. W. Cooper, W. Bain, W. Harrison, T. H. Harker, D. Sinclair and T. S. Foster, jun. ; hon secretary, Mr H. Holderness ; hon treasurer, Mr X R. Buchanan ; hon instructors, Messrs T. H. Harker, C. H. Fox and T. S. Foster, jun.; auditor, Mr H. Mouat; Centre delegates, Messrs H. Holderness and J. R. Buchanan. Three new members were elected. A letter was received 1 from Mr G. J. C. Smart urging the importance of training for races, polo, etc., and it was decided to form ai training class in connection with the club. It was resolved to offer a prize of £1 Is to the member introducing the greatest number of members during the season. Mr J. R. Buchanan offered a prize of a trophy of the value of £1 Is to the member who shows the greatest improvement in swimming during! the season. It to openi the season on- Saturday, and uhe meeting closed with votes of thanks to the late captain,; secretary, treasurer and the chairman.
