FOOTBALL.

INTERPROYINCIAL BATTALION MATCH.

A football match between teams representing the Wellington- and CanterburyVolunteers Battalions -was played at Lancaster Park on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of several spectators. Special interest was evinced in the contest by reason cf the fact that included in both teams, more particularly the Northern, were, players of present or past interprorincial reputation. Saturday’s game, however, though exciting enough, never reached a higher standard than is usually the case when “ ir- , regulars ” meet, the individual excellence of a few being nullified by the lack of combination in the teams as a whole. Tire local players held a slight advantage throughout the game, principally due to their forward rushes, and won by three points to nil. This score was obtained by 0. H. Lawrence kicking a splendid goal from a penalty mark. Of the Canterbury backs, Martin and F. M. B. Fisher were the mainstays. The Wellington backs occasionally exhibited flashes of first-class play, but there was always a weak link which spoilt numerous opportunities they had to score. Mr F. T. Evans was referee. The gate takings amounted to £6 14s.
