PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.
The committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals met yesterday afternoon ; present.—Mr M. Murphy (chairman). Miss Morrow, and Messrs O. B. •Pemberton, W. Prudhoe, C, S. Bean, and J. F. Waebsmann. Mrs Perria.n wrote, stating that she regretted that she could not agree to he nominated as a member of the committee. She thanked! the committee for its resolution of sympathy, passed at the previous meeting. If any cases of cruelty caano under her notice she would bring them under the notice of the Society. She forwarded a contribution of £1 Is. The letter was received with thanks. Mr C. K. Brebaer wrote, expressing aui opinion that representations should be mads to- the Railway Department in regard to tha conveyance of dogs. It was stated that the Railway Department had been communicated with on tho subject already, and the letter was received. The Inspector's report gave details ofl recent cases brought before the Court. In regard to some cases that had been dismissed it was stated that the result was most unsatisfactory. He had inquired into the case of some sheep at Lobum, which, it had been alleged, were starving. He' found that they were supplied with turnips, but were unable to cat them. They) were dying from old age. and from nothing else. Since Sunday, four cases had been reported to him. One was in connection) with the killing of a dog in the Park, and others were alleged cruelty to horses. Tlio annual report, to be presented ati the next meeting, was considered and approved. It was decided that the Inspector’s private house should he connected with the telephone system. The annual meeting was fixed for Sept. 18, and it was decided that the Mayor should! be asked to take the chair. The arrangements for the programme were left in the hands of the Chairman and Messrs Pemberton and Zouch.
