An explosion, of gas took place in a house on. Franklin Road on Sunday night. The hous'e was owned by Mr D. Parker, and occupied by a 'widow named Mrs Davis and her family. A strong smell of gas was noticed in the front rooms, and a man named James Turner struck a match and caused a great explosion, which smashed the glass in the inojit windows and blew a bay window clean bat, besides doing other considerable damage. A man named George Williams had his face and hamds burned, and Mrs and Miss Davis were also burned. Nobody, however, was very seriously hurt. Mr Wimberley, secretary of the Hot Lakes Steam Navigation Company, was found drowned in Rotorua.Lake yesterday morning. ■ DUNEDIN, June 23. William Bishop, manager of the Champion Dredge, at Beaumont, was caught in the machinery of the dredge on Friday, and died from * the, injuries yesterday. Mr M. Nalder, librarian of the Supreme Court, met with an/ accident yesterday while cycling in Sydenham. He was unfortunate enough to come into collision with another cyclist, and sustained a severe fall, breaking one of his arms.
