The House of Lords, on Lord Halsbury's motion, rejected the Earl Russell Divorce Bill without division. Lord Halsbury said it would -be an outrage to propose the abolition of the marriage. MOTOR TRAFFIC. A motor service for mails has been- established between Liverpool and Manchester. A NEW ORDER. The Government of India has instituted a Civil Division Order of Merit for natives. It will be awarded for special acts of bravery. MAY DAY DEMONSTRATIONS. The usual May Day demonstrations on the Continent passed off quietly. THE CORK EXHIBITION. The Cork Exhibition has opened. The North of Ireland has heartily co-operated with the South to ensure the success of the Exhibition. THE LONDON WATER BOARD. (Received May 4, 4.58 p.m.) ' LONDON, May 3. In connection with the new London Water Board the Government insists upon the representation of boroughs on the Board and the joint parliamentary committee is expected to reconsider the matter. A NEW STEAMSHIP LINE.
The German Australian Steamship Company will start a line from Hamburg to New York, via Antwerp,- and run steamers from New York to Australia via Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
