NEW ZEALAND WHEEL RACE -•" , . MEETING. The second and concluding day's racing of the New Zealand Wheel Race meeting was held at Lancaster. Park on Saturday

in the presence of a fair number of specta•i. tors. A strong north-wester blew early in the afternoon, and later the wind changed to south-west. As a result, negotiating some of the corners of the track became difficult, and several riders- in consequence fell while travelling at top speed. H. R. Rnssell was thrown heavily in the Half-mile Amateur Handicap, and for seme tin:* remained unconscious. He was attended by Dr Thacker, who found him to be suffer- : ing from concussion of the brain. Russell - subsequently recovered sufficiently to be removed to' his home. In the Mile Cash Handicap, J. Bain, of Kaitangata, and T. Campbell, of Kaikoura, fell, the former • t>eing badly shaken, whilst the latter had his face severely cut, Drs Tha>eker and , Pomare rendered assistance. As on Thursday, some first class racing was witnessed, the Wheel Race in particular providing a splendid contest. Although no back-mark xiders had been left in the final heat, the field comprised racing cyclists of considerably more, than average ability. In a. hard' run race, the limit mark riders succeed- , ed in keeping ahead of their followers and gapied the three prizes. A. Watson, of Wtiflganui, who was also the most success. lul rider in the other events at the meeting, proved too good for his companions in the sprint home, and won comfortably. He is a. young rider who raced for the first time last season, and he showed himself to be possessed of great sprinting abilities and powers of endurance. The second rider, Bail), 'a lso exhibited exceptional staying powers'.' The principal amateur event was won bv T. Dates, who rode with remarkable d'ash throughout the meeting. H. Amos and A. R. Barker, the scratch riders in the amateur and cash ranks respectively, both failed to reproduce last year's form. The meeting was conducted with remarkable punctuality.
