THE CHESS TOURNAMENT.

AUCKLAND, Dec. 28. The third round of the chess tournament was played to-day. Miles ■ defeated Jowitt, after a; long struggle. In the Guerson v. Jaquet match the former opened -with a Pawim' to King's fourth, Racquet replying. with the Sicilian defence. Black won a Pawn on the twelfth move, followed by the exchange on the twentieth move. Black won on the sixty-sixth move. The match Forsyth v. Barnes created great interest. The champion having the opening, Barnes played the two Knight's defence, which developed into a Guioco Piano game. About the middle of the game Barnes initiated an attack, resulting invthe less of the champion's Queen. Barnes retained an advantage, and won after a hard struggle. Barnes subsequently beat Edwards. This complete* the first half of the tournament, the scores being:—Barnes 2 wins; Edwards 2 • losses; Forsyth 1 win, 1 lore ; Grierson-' 1 win, 2 losses; Jacquet 2 wins, 1 loss 1; Jowitt 3'losses j Miles 3 wins. Each of the southern players has had a bye, the Auckland competitors receiving theirs next week.
