The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals met at the City Council ■•■ Chambers last evening ; present—Mr D. B. M'Laren (chairman), Mrs Julius, Mrs TownE end, and Messrs W..S. Bean, M. Murphy , and' D. H. Bait. An apology was received for the ajbsoncc cf Miss Fcrrar and S. Weetman and: J. H. Parker. Mr Murphy introduced Mr Bait, veterinary surgeon, a I new member.

ThW Inspector reported that several cases of alleged, cruelty had been investigated. A portion Of laud'in Lyttelton which he had! made several efforts to obtain last year for use as a receiving paddock for sheep had 1 been acquired by the stock agents on a seven yews' lease. The paddock was right in the track of sheep coming from Lyttelton, and gave access to the top of the hill by a .short route, saving practically a mile of badly-fenced road. The report iras adopted. ,

Mr Bean, treasurer, stated that the finances, though not so satisfactory as they might 'be, were better than they were when the previous meeting was held. The balance from the entertainment .held recently amounted to £2 10s 6d, "and this, added' to £4 19s 5d frciro donations and subscriptions, made a total of £7 9s lid. The liabilities amounted to about £8 ss, so that there was a debit balance of £l, after paying the Inspector's salary up to date. He regretted that he l had not a. mere satisfactory statement to make. The existence of the Society certainly was justified. Letters read at the meeting had proved that. Although/ the Society's application to the Government for financial assistance had nM been successful, the police ivcro evidently active in regard' to-bringing 'forward' cases of cruelty.' The annual meeting was fixed' for Friday at 8 p.m., in tliß»oity Council's Chambers. Arrargeinents Trill be made for the delivery of speeches. It was decld'ecT, on the suggestion of Mr Rai'fr, that the Avon. Road Board should be requested to clean out the drinking place for ■tock between Papanui and' Belfast.
