THE GRIMSBY STRIKE. United Press ' Association—By Eleotrio Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, Oct. 1. Tho Eairl of Scarborough Iras induced the Grimsby strikers to resume work pending the B'oarcl of Trade arbitration. CONCILIATION AND ARBITRATION ACT. [From Our Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. An interesting episode to-day was the deputation sen* to the Premier by the Wellington branch of 'the Amalgamated 1 Carpenters' and Joiners' Union. They presented two grievances:—(l) They cannot bo registered under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act because there are doubts as to whether they require an absolute majority of ithe amalgamated Union; (2) they Want the maintenroea of the law, which relieves ' Um'onfets from 'the , danger of becoming '"marked men" in the -disputes between employer and employed. For the first they regard it as 'absurd that a majority should'. be 'required! of a Society which ramifies over many countries. The Premier, in reply 'to their request for legislation on this, head, said be thought that the law permits the registration by local majorities, but he would take 'the Solicitor-General's opinion. Regarding the. second l point, he was aware of the danger complained of, as there were, hi the Government service many men who had suffered for their prominence in labour disputes. Until employers gave evidence of a better feeling, he was referring only to a minority, ho would not be a .party to any alteration of the law which gives.prominent positions in the mach.ir.l2ry of the Industrial Act to men who are safe from arbitrary treatment by Regarding the Industrial Conciliation Awj-. he said that there bad been a good ctoal of fricti'on, but matters, were settling down comfortably to "bed rock" on lines mutually agreeable.
