CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

A SEVERE PENALTY. Another man had an exemplary lesson on the evils of cruelty to ...animals at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. ■ David Weir was caught driving a horse suffering from sore shoulders through town,, and promptly haled up to the Courthouse. The poor, horse's shoulders were covered with raw, bleeding .sores, from which, blood had soaked into the collar and hair, and the animal was moreover heavy in foal. Weir pleaded' guilty, but said that the mare did not belong to him, but to Mr ■D. M'Gregor, at milkman. He had driven it from Bromley that morning. Mr Bishop, S.M., said that it was most disgraceful to everyone concerned that a horse should be driven in- such a condition. There was no question about the gross cruelty of the act. The horse concerned in Monday's prosecution had nisb been ■anything like so bad. The accused must -have been aware'of what he was doing, and he would be'fined £5 and costs, in default one month's imprisonment. • 'The accused asked how long he would be given to obtain the money, but the Magistrate refused to allow any time.
