Lieubenant-Cclonel Webb, the recentlyappointed commanding officer of the district, has taken up >his new duties, and attended at the District Volunteer Office yesterday morning. Liaatenant - Colonel Webb has lradk considerable' experience in regard tgt both Volunteers and regular troops,, He was bcrn at Essenddh, Herts,. in England, "en May 8, 1843.' He was educated at Marlborough College and a?tj the Honourable East India Company's Mili-_ tary College ait Additcombe. He obtained! his commission as eraign on June 8, 1861 r and went to India, where he joined the 3rd Bombay European Regiment (now the End Battalion Lelnster Regiment) at Kurrachee. lie was promoted to the position of lieutenant on July 18, 1867, and waa appointed adjucant- of his regiment on Dec." 4, 1871, holding the appointment until hiM retirement. He served in India from 1861, amdi returned to England with- his regiment at tiba end cf 1877.' His retired from the Army in March, 1878, receiving a. gratuity. Lieuicnant-Colonel Webb married" in Indiai a,-daughter of Major-General A. G. David-, son, and came to New Zealand .with his family in August 1878. He was appointed! district adjutant under the New Zealand! Government on Jan. 1, 1880, and. served in that capacity in the districts of Nelson, Marlborough, and Westland, until January, 1891, when he was promoted to ths command of the Otago district with fch©. rank of litutenant-eolonel.
