With the exception) of the north' branch of ftliß Ashburton River, all the rivcrb in Central Canterbury—tbs Rangitaita, Rakaia and Ashburton (south branch, and th* mouth) —are in fair condition for the comroeiMjejnaot of the fishing season to-day. Yesterday the Rafcaia •was a bit discoloured, but was expected to be fit for; fishing today. Tbo south branch cf the Ashburton is clear, and the volume of water coming down is larger than anglers ca.ro 'for, but it is expected that good bags will be taken. It 'is skated that a good deal of poaching ■has been going on lately.
