FIRES.
Shortly before eight o’clock last evening, an alarm of fire signalled from the box by St Lul'e's Church brought out the Brigade smartly. The fire was in a tenroomed house in Clyde Street, off Madras Street North, occupied by Mrs Clarkson. It began in a bedroom in the upper storey, and quickly spread over the entire floor. The Brigade subdued it, however, before it penetrated to the basement. The next door house, which was only separated from the burning building by ai foot space, was in great peril at one stage, but a fireman, worming himself between with ai hose, quickly put an end to* all apprehension. There was no one at home at the time of the outbreak, the inmates being understood to have attended Mr Woolley’s lecture. The whole of .•the top floor was gutted. The insurances, and amount of damage done, are unknown until the owners can be communicated with.
