ACCIDENT TO A STEAMER.
[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, August 22. The steamer Elmville, a large timber carrier, chartered by tho Kauri Timber Company, struck with considerable force very near Tokatoka. She was going at half-speed at the time, and did not stop. A survey showed that t'Jwee plates are seriously .damaged and a number of bolts loosened in a watertight compartment. Permission has been given to load the vessel for Melbourne, where repairs will be effected. . The Elmville was chartered by the Kauri Timber Company for several trips, two or three of which she has already made. She arrived at Kaipara Heads on Monday. While near Tokatoka she struck with considerable foi-oe a reef of rocks which runs out near Green Hill, below Tokatoka. The vessel proceeded to Aratapu, where a survey was made. Examination shows that the injured plates are in a watertight compartment, the cement lining of which has been damaged. Where necessary fresh cement has been put in.
