NEW YORK, August 20,
The iceberg on which the Islander struck was barely visible on the surface. Many victims were asleep at the time. The impact jammed the stateroom doors, which the stewards burst open, .with axes. The passengers rushed six boats, disregarding the women, and pushed off, despite the efforts of the officers to stop them and threats to nse their axes. Several persons wore drowned while trying to secure the gold.
