The schooner Lily arrived from Greymouth at 10.35 a.m. yesterday. Yesterday the a.s. Mararoa arrived from Dunedin at 6.20 a.m. j the a.s. Petone from Timaru at 6.30 a.m.; the s.s. Te Anau from Wellington, and' east coast ports at 6.50 a.m.; and the s.s. XJipolu from southern ports at B.lo' a.m. The schooner Annie Hill has been purchased by Mr W. Cook, of Lyttelton, from Mr W. S. Waterston, of- Invercargill. Mr Cook intends to run her in place of the Jessie Niccot ini the trade between Lyttelton and Kaipara. . The returns compiled by “Lloyds Register “ dhow that, at the close ox the quarter ended Juno 30, 1901, excluding warships, 441 vessels of 1,300,179 tons gross were under construction in the United Kingdom, .against 499 vessels of 1,265,313 tons gross on, June 30, 1900. The total included 413 steain vessels, of 1,287,818 tons, again®! 473 of 1,250,838 tons in June last year. Two of the steamer?- being built were of iron, but their tonnage was, only 880 Two were wood or composite, and their gross register was hut 72 tons. The remaining 409, of 1,287,366 ton®, wore of steel. In Juna last year 35 iron steamers were under construction, and their aggregate gross tonnage was 6,661 tons. The sailing vessels being built in June last numbered 28, of 12,361 tons gross, against 26, of 14,473 tons, gross, in June, 1900. Fifteen, of the sailing vessels, of 10 948 tons, were of steel, and the xernaminrr is 0 { 1413 tons, of wood and composite. ! The present return' shows a decrease in the tonnage tinder construction of about 3000 tons, as-.compared wuh the figures for the preceding quarter. As compared with threturn for December, 1898, the hignest on record; there is a reduction of 101,000 tons. _ The -sa Taxawera waits at Wellington this trip for the San Francisco mail.
