BOROUGH COUNCILS.

, KAIAPOI. The usual meeting of the Kaiapoißorough Council was held on Tuesday evening; present—The Mayor and Councillors Pearce, Pamham, Keetley, Winterbourne, Bugg, Dayman, 'Midgley and Blackwell. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor Eagle. Correspondence was received from a ratepayer, complaining of the state of the ditch an Cass Street, and the communication _ was referred to the, Sanitary Committee for immediate attention; from the_ manager of the Christchurch Gasworks, with regard to a supply of tar : and from the Telegraph Department, sanctioning the Council’s request for> layinv a wire, connecting the fire-. bell with the Engineer’s residence. The Surveyor’s report on the different works in progress was read and adopted. The Finance Committee reported receipts £l6 12s Bd, and debit balance £384 15s lid, and recommended ' accounts amounting to - £26 6s 5d for payment. The report was adopted. ' The _Comicil agreed to have the embankment running through Mr Lynskey’s paddock attended to at once, and to charge him with the expense. The Council then sat as-the Domain Board, and passed accounts to the amount of £1 4s for payment, and also passed a -hearty vote of thanks to the manager .of the Kaiapoi' Woollen Factory for Ins courtesy in allowing’the gatekeeper to feed the swans. ....

NEW BRIGHTON. • The adjourned meeting' of * the New Brighton Borough Council was held on , Tuesday' evening; present—The Mayor (Mr G. MTntyre), and Councillors Glanville, Wyatt, Owles, Walker, Edawxds, Bellamy, and Winny. The Works Committee reported that two tenders had been received for the proposed Council Chambers,' and considered that both were too high. The committee recommended the Council to decline both tenders, and on the' motion of Councillor Winny the recommendation was adopted and agreed) to. Councillor Winny suggested calling tenders for labour 'only; he had estimated the cost of material. ,On the motion of .Councillor Winny it was resolved that alternate tenders should be called for the construction of the building and fer labour only. The Council then went into committee, to consider .the sanitary question, arid upon resuming reported that arrangements would be made for a suitable site for nightsoil deposits.
