THE GERARDY RECITALS.

The Choral Hall was crowded to the doors again en Saturday night, when M. Gerardy, the famous Belgian 'celloist, gave his second recital.. Upon 'his making his appearance he received a perfect ovation. So carried away was the audience by his marvellous playing that at the conclusion of each number he was loudly cheered, whiki many of those ? pre;-ent cried "Bravo!"' In spite of the heavy work which M. Gerardy had set himself on the programme, he obligingly responded to the almost imperative demands for encores, in ['each case playing a different I ;class of music ! to the original number. ' The' ; iterns on the j programme were Rubinstein's "Sonata in ;D, Op. 18 ";. Boccherini's " Sonata " ; '-"■lie Cygne" (Saint-Saens); "Serenade 'from the Suite" (V. Herbert); "Papillon" (D. Popper); "Nocturne" (Chopin), and "Rhapsodie. Hongroise" (D. Popper). Mrs Burns, who was in excellent voice, sang Chaminade's "L'Ete," doing full justice to the florid passages, and was equally successful 'with the song which she. gave as an encore. Mr Laurence Phillip, who is a marvellously sympathetic" accompanist, played, as pianoforte solos, Sinding's " Fruhlingsranchen". and Leschetizky's "Les Deux Alouettes," for .-which he was' vociferously encored, responding with, an equally difficult performance. This evening M. Gerardy will give a farewell recital in the Canterbury Hall, for which an exceptionally fine programme has been arranged. This will be the first occasion upon, which the. talented artist has played to popular prices.
