TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —I desire to draw the attention of the authorities to tire want of ventilation in the public reading-room. ■ The room, though only a temporary one, is very ill adapted to‘its present purpose. In size it is not more than 30 x 20 feet, and is at all hours of the day overcrowded. Yesterday 1 counted no less than, thirty-eight persons there. It is impossible for anyone to stay there longer than a few minutes, as the atmosphere is rendered more than vile by the emission of noxious fumes from a - gas stove To all appearance there is absolutely no ventilation, as the door even is kept constantly closed. It is to be hoped the authorities will before long do something to make the air at least breathable, which it certainly is not at present. I '
