RANGIORA.

The monthly meeting of the Rangrora Borough -Council was held on Friday evening; .wesent-The Mayor (Mr J. Sansom), Councillors Hills, Bell,/Caimichael, Good, ■Poster, Keir, Wilson, Ralph and Jennings. The Sydenham- Borough Council wrote con- ; veying resolutions passed at the Conference held to consider the methods of the Government Valuation Department in the j making and revising of rolls. The Mayor explained that, owing to the date of the being inconvenient, the Council was not. represented. It was decided to inform the Sydenham Council that this ■Council "approved of the resolutions passed at the Conference. An application from the Kowai Road Board for a payment of a share of the costs (£2B 9s 9d) incurred m the litigation with the Ashley Road Board over the protective works, was not acceded to, the Council considering that it was not connected with the case. The Directors of i the Co-operative Stores Company wrote -giving permission for the erection of a public convenience on their section at the corner of Alfred and Perceval. Streets; and the Works Committee was instructed to iattend to-the matter. A letter was' xe--ceived :fiomithe Read Board drawing attention to the damage being done to the ,j West.-Town.-Belt by tail water from one of the Water Board's races. It was resolved to request the Water Board either to make proper provision for getting the water away, cr to stop it altogether. It was decided to invite tenders for supplying 200 loads of boulders to be crushed by the Road Board's stone-breaker. The pound-keieper's report for the quarter showed that .fees 1 amounting to' 18s' 6d had been collected. The Inspector of Buildings (Superintendent .Smith, of the Fire Brigade) reported that i;'he)>Had"examined 433 buildings, and had 'served '6l notices to owners for 144 ropes or other means of escape. The hotels were found to>„ he. all well provided with fire '-.escapes^-but-'the boarding-houses had -no , means of escape whatever.- There being no high buildings, he had considered ordinary knotted ropss to be> quite sufficient. The householders rendered him every assistance I in carrying out his duties, and where es- | capes were required they were willingly provided. He thanked Councillor Carmichael, and Mr Amy, the Town Clerk, for assistance during his inspection. The receipts'for the month were reported to be £BO '3s" 4d, and the bank credit balance £475 ; 10s Bd. Accounts amounting to £l7O 3s Id were passed for payment. It was resolved to invite tenders for re-erect-, : 'mg the pound with sawn timber. On the motion, of Councillor Bell, it was decidedto ask the Christchurch City Council whe:'ther the northern boroughs were to be taken into consideration in the scheme for " harnessing " the Waimakariri. Councillor Jennings moved that Mr D. Buddo, M.H.R., should be asked to draw the attention of the Government to the need for new buildings at the Rangiora railway station in place of the present antiquated accommodation. The motion was carried. The -meeting then> terminated. AKAROA. The ordinary meeting of the Akaroa' Borough Council was held on Wednesday; present—the Mayer, and Councillors Taylor, Earnshaw, Armstrong, Check-ley, Newton, Leete, Motbram and Munro. The Treasury wrote that £IOOO had been placed to the Council's credit on account of loan for waterworks. Mrs C. Haylock -wrote, offering to sell land at corner of Jolie Street "'for £35. The offer was accepted. The usual grant of £ls was parsed to the Akaroa Library. It was decided that a public meeting should be held in the Coun-' cil Chambers at an early date, to consider -.pxe best (method of welcoming-.the .Penin-f 'siila troopers returning by the Tagus. The! financial report showed the receipts since last,meeting to. have been '£4 7s.ld; accounts for payment amounted, to £56 Is 7d.
