CHILDREN'S CONVALESCENT COTTAGE.

The first annual report in connection with, the Convalescent Cottage for Children at New Brighton states that the committee, taking the term to March 31, 1900, as the first year, lhas to report that the funds for maintenance have .been kept up in a satisfactory manner. The house-keeping expenses have been very moderate, partly owing to the careful management of the matron and partly to the generous contributions in kind, made during "pounds week" and at other times. The committee would have ' be«n.■•'. glad to -see- the bouse more fully occupied during the year under review. Sixty-five children have been ad■niitted (about ten of them on two separate occasions) for a (fortnight, and in some special occasions for a longer term. The cottage has accommodation for eight children, and the above figures show that it has not; on the average, been kept much more than half full. The Secretary has endeavoured to make the institution "fully known, both by letters in the daily newspapers and by circulars to the clergy, ministers'and medical men.- There must be a number'KJif suitable children needing the change'of air, nourishing food, and careful attention obtainable by a fortnight's stay at the cottage, so no doubt it will, in time, be kept fully occupied. The committee has. found that many parents, from a sense of independence, object to accepting ■the'benefits of the cottage gratuitously, and it has decided in future to make a.charge of 7s a week, but will at the same time give the ladies who admit the children . full authority to admit necessitous cases at the expense of .tho League. Forms, of application and (other information can be obtained from Miss Cox, ■ Chancery Lane, Miss. Ross, 158, Montreal Street, or Mrs Eldridge, 10, Peacock Street.
