HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Christchurch Horticultural Society was held in Messrs Kaye and Carter’s rooms on Friday night, at • whidb there was a good attendance, , and, in the unavoidable absence of the President, Mr A. E. Lowe was voted to the chair. The Honorary Secretary, Mr E. C. Dann, read- the annual report, which referred to a more satisfactory balance-sheet than had been presented for some years, the balance being £ls 5s lid, and the expenditure £2OO 18s 2d. The membership roll had filled better than last year, 129 having paid subscriptions. , A liberal special prize list had conduced to especially good displays. It was unfortunate that the weather- miutated against the success of the second day of the spring show, but, as an .exhibition, it was, .perhaps, the best seen in Christchurch, the narcissi blooms being of .excellent quality and in very great variety. The Chairman referred, to the valuable gift made during the year by the President, Mr R. Heaton Rhodes, which had led to the financial success in a great measure. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. A vote of thanks was accorded to the President, Mr R.: H. Rhodes, tor his gift of £3O to put the finances straight at the end of the ■ year previous, and he was elected a fife'member, of the Society.

, Silver medals were presented to Mr J. T. Cotton (gardener to Mr A. E. G. Rhodes), for collection of hardy cut flowers at the Jubilee Show, 1901; tp Mr W. Jones, for a group of plants at the spring show, 1900, and to Mr A. E. Lowe (gardener to Mr R.iH. Rhodes), for collection of out blooms |of . narcissi at the spring show,, 1901. These were, duly acknowledged. Tho election of officers resulted as fol-lows:—-Patron, Lord Ranfurly; patroness, the Countess of Ranfurly; president', Mr R. Heaton Rhodes, M.H.R. : vice-presi-dents, Hons J. T. Peacock, M.L.C., and E. C. J. Stevens.' M.L.C., Messrs ■H. P. Murray-Avnslev, J. O’B. Beckett, A. Carrick. A. E. G* Rhodes, C. A. C. Hardy, M.H.R., G. Humphreys, and Dr Levinge; honorary botanist, Mr L. Cockayne ; honorary biologist. Dr Bendy; honorary entomologist, Mr W. W. Smith (Ashburton); honorary auditor, Mr R. ,E. M. Evans; honorary treasurer, Mr R. Heaton Rhodes ; honorary secretary, Mr E. C. Dann: Council—Messrs T. Allen, A. W. Buxton, F. Biggs, J.' Cotton. D. Craw, E. C. Dann, J R. Gray, J. Gun-trip,- W. T. Mitchell, M. Murphy, W. Willcox and. W. A. Carpenter. . , Regret was expressed at Mr-A. E. Lowes resignation from the Council, and a vote of thanks was accorded to him for .the services he had rendered during the five years he had been a member of the Council.
