MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
The quarterly summoned meeting of -the Naomi xvebekah Lodge of Oddfellows was held in toe Orange Hall on Wednesday even-top, Sister Parry, N.G., in the chair. There was a large attendance of members, Tno following officers were installed by the D.D.G.M. Bro €. WilktosN.G., Sister Fraser; V.G., Sister Hallo-way; secretary. Sister Lothiam; treasurer, Sister White; chaplain, Sister Ranger. The weekly meeting of the Lyttelton Literary and Debating Society was held in the Presbyterian Schoolroom on Thursday evening. There was a large attendance, and Mr A. - Henderson presided. The evening was occupied with the reading and discussion of short original papers contributed to the Journal of the Society. Tbe subjects of these were “ The' Beading of. History as an Amusement,” “ Ought Married Men to Spend their Evenings at the Club?” “Tolerance,” “Civilisation,” “ Should too Husband Light the Fire in the Morning,” and “Nothing.” Mr G. Lauremon, M.H.R., on Thursday evening lectured in St Paul’s schoolroom to the members of the Church Literary Society on “The Growth of the British Empire in the 19th Ontury.” Dr.' Elmslie presided. The lecture was illustrated) by diagrams showing the progress made by .the Empire during the past hundred years. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Laurenson.
