At a meeting of a committee of Peers and Members of the House of Commons desirous of securing the heraldic recognition of Wales, Sir William Harcourt assured tho members that Sir Francis Knollys, the Private Secretary to the King, had convinced him that though no alteration ini the Royal Arms would be permitted yet, something would possibly be done to meet the wishes of Wales in connection with the arras of the Prince of Wales when that title was revived.' General Pole-'Carew, ’addressing ’his tenantry, referred to . the fact that his name was being mentioned in connection with the command of the Federal forces. The Australian Press, he said, knew more about the matter than- he, but if duty called he. should- obey. The jury disagreed in the ConWa-y case, and Jane Smith was' released on her own recognisances of £lO, to come up for trial when called upon. Earl Roberts has pardoned several Volunteers who were sentenced to penal servitude for sleeping at their post. Commandant Barraud Venter had arranged with his comm'ahdo of one hundred to surrender, but one of 'his men informed. General Badenhans. who imprisoned Commandant Venter. The latter and his two sons, however, escaped to the British lines at Mermo. Colonel Golenbrander’s scouts are clearing the north-east Transvaal, and are taking many prisoners tod waggons, while many Boers are surrendering. The Boers are trying to break through the cordons and join Commandant Beyers’ force. General Buller declares that the campaign showed the want of accuracy of the British rifle fire at short ranges, thus allowing the foe to escape with insufficient punishment after positions had been gained. Several indignation meetings were held outside the Queen’s Hall, where ’a pro-Boer meeting was held, and resolutions were passed condemning the pro-Boer campaign, and it was enthusiastically resolved to surmort the Government. De Wet and Steyn recently made unsuccessful attempts! to cross the line at Standerton and Heidelberg.
