BOROUGH COUNCIL.

WOOLSTON. The Woolst-on Borough Council me£ on Thursday last; present—The "Mayor (Mr W. T. Thomas), Councillors Lord, Moore, Henley, Owen, Hobson, Pairhh and Bowron.The Loyal Orange Institution wrote iiivitm<* the patronage of the Council to a concert to be held on July 12, which the Council accorded. The secretary of the Gas Company wrote stating that the company had arranged to keep alight during the nights of the Royal visit, all public lamps. Tne Chief Surveyor wrote that the Tamai Road being now' under the jurisdiction of the Council, tho Government did not intend to spend any more' money on it. It was decided to reply that the Council would adhere to the particulars laid down in their letter of Nov. 17, 19C0. The Council decided to inspect tho streets of the borough in reference to certain proposals.. It was resolved to give notice to owners of properties to cut down tree branches overhanging the footpaths, and to clear all gorse or trees from the streets to the middle line of roadway. It was further resolved to give notice to 'owners of properties abutting on the river to remove any obstruction to- the traffic, and to call on the property-owners to have several private streets formed in accordance with the Act, The report of the Works Committee was read and adopted, as was also the Finance Committee's report. The ■receipts for the month were £l2 15s 3d, accounts authorised to be paid £42 2s 6d, and debit balance at bank £516 lis 9d.' The meeting then rose. AKAROA. The fortnightly meeting of the Akaroa Borough Council" was held on Wednesday evening; present—the Mayor (Mr H. C. Orbell), and Councillors Taylor, Armstrong, Oheckley, New&n, Leete, Wottram, Earnthaw and Munro. Mr Wilkins, engineer, attended the meeting, and reported on the progress of the new waterworks, stating that owing to the fall in the price of iron, the cost of the scheme would be some £SOO less- than anticipated. He suggested that part of the money thus saved should be expended in roofing the reservoir. It was resolved to ask Mr Wilkins to prepare plans and estimates for the roofing. A deputation from the Lawn Tennis Club asked for a subsidy of pound for pound for the erection of a pavilion for the club's use. It was decided to grant the subsidy, but if a pavilion was to be erected it should be for the joint use of all the athletic clubs. The financial statement showed receipts since last meeting to have been £4 3s 3d; accounts presented for payment amountad to £39 2s 6d. The Town Clerk'was asked to prepare for next meeting a return showing the revenue that would accrue from rating on unimproved values, and that from the present system of rating.
