THE CENSUS.
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. HOBART, April 20. An interim statement of the census shows that the population is 171,066. The population of Hobart is 24,576, and. of Launceston 18,043. SYDNEY, April 20. The census for Sydney and suburbs, including shipping, shows a population of 488,968, an increase of 101,637 on the census of 1891. [Per Press Association.] ' AUCKLAND, April 20. The Devonport borough census shorns the population to be 3814, an increase of 804. NAPIER, April 20. The census returns show that the population of Hastings borough is 3650, an increase of 452 compared with the population in 1896. WELLINGTON, April 20. The census'returns for the Hutt County, including the boroughs, show an increase of 10,650 since 1896. The population of Wellington City has increased from 37,441 to 43,886, and the suburban boroughs have all increased but one. Melrose has increased from 2044 to 2985, Karon has' decreased from 1024 to 1012, Onflow has' increased from 1249 to 1499, and the Hutt from 1520 to 1824. Exclusive of the boroughs, the county population is 7187, an increase, including. 510 members of the Seventh Contingent, of 1417.
The population of the county of Cheviot is 1120, an increase of 78 since 1896. OAMARU, April 20.
• The census gives the population of .Camara at 4836, a decrease of 389 on the number of the population in 1896.
