The miners who were imprisoned by the fire in the colliery at Cumberland, British Columbia, were suffocated. They consisted of 27 whites, 29 Chinese, and 9 Japanese. The other occupants of the building escaped in their night clothes. Nothing was saved. The servants had a narrow escape. . The boarders Barry and Gemmell were badly burned, and had to be removed to ihe hospital. The insurances are unknown. GISBORNE, Feb. 18. The schoolhouso at Muriwai was totally destroyed by fire last night.
