Just after the Champion Plate had been decided tho tropical downpour whilst, driving .everybody to seek shelter, considerably benefited the'course, and probably materially assisted the infirm Benzoin to seeurc the- SI. Albans Handicap. Though the racing on tho whole was interesting, noiio of (he races pvo-virlcd a- close finish, and' the pleasure of witnessing the various contests was somewhat marred by tho unfortunate mishap to 'R.la/.er when competing in the Champion Plate. While lie was .running round llm top luni in front, of Cruciform and .Metnchikoff the popular Duueclin sprinter was f-ccn to suddenly falter, and J. Jackson, his rider, was thrown on to and over the rails. The horse (daggered on for a few yards,' when he fell, and when it was noticed that neither rider nor horse- rose it war, naturally concluded' that there had been a serious, if not fatal, accident, to either or both. Dr Palmer at once went to tho assistance of the injured man, aivd when tho other horses competing in the race came back to scale it was seen that Cruciform and her rider wcra covered with blood, which had come from Blazer's nostrils, the result, of his braking a bloodvessel in the head. The horse quicklyrecovered, and was; brought back to the paddock, apparently little the wor.se for his mishap, but it" was some- time before Jackson could be brought to the casualtyroom, as it was found to be inadvisable to place iim on the ambulance stretcher, and he was carried clown, tho straight by half-a-dozen men. The anxiety concerning Jackson was relieved when the medical men reported that though he was severely shaken no serious result need be anticipated. When Jackson-was thrown .he struck the rail which runs round the inside of the course, and ws extremely fortunate in escaping serious injury. Three Yaldhurst-lrained aiVbnnls were again successful, Mr Stead thus securing seven of the fourteen fiat events decided during the two days. Ilex was sent cut favourite for the Belfast Hurdle Race, but when- he blundered at the fence near the six-furlong post, unseating his rider, CI. Robertson, who escaped injury, Deny had no difficulty in holding his'two opponents and scoring a popular victory. The. to'tu.'is'aloi' investments ■m the St Albans Handicap show that backers were at a, loss to discover the probable winner, the race falling to Benzoin, who secured the stake with the greatest ease. This imported horse, has been running most disappointingly, -and his connections did not benefit by his victory beyond tho stake. Hermosa was in front until well in the. straight, but she could not respond to Benzoin's challenge, though she defeated the remainder of the field, Cameo finishing third. Paladin, who was again fractious at the post, Skobsleff and Cherrystone - (the actual favourite) failed to make the slightest impression upon the leaders. Despite his heavy, burden, Formosan was made favourite for the Flying Handicap, and after, a pretty race to"the distance the son of St Legcr came out and won comfortably from the North Island mare West Guard, Cora Linn filling third position. St Denis and Spider were prominent during the earlier stages of the race, the former running fourth, whilst Military, in fifth place, was probably .galloping 'faster than anything else over the last half-furlong. Battleciy annexed, he Selling Race after an interesting race with Rougemont, Bonaparte, who appeared to have the race at his mercy at the distance, again declining to try i when challenged. The winner was .purchased by Mr V. Harris for £7O, consequently the owner of the second horse receives 10 sovs.. Only three horses were nominated for the Post Stakes.. Strathnairn went nut favourite, but was defeated by St Denis, who thus secured, his first race over eight furlongs. The totalisator investments for the day amounted to £4209, making a total for the.two days of £8074, -against £B9-11 for the corresponding meeting last. year.
