ST JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION.
The sixteenth annual report of the New Zealand Centre of the St_Jolm Ambulance Association, which will he placed before a, meeting of the Centre in the C.'ty Council Chambers on Wednesday, states that during the year ninety-nine patients have been conveyed to the hospital and other plac.'s by horse ambulance, and in seventeen cases the'service has net been paid for. The litter service is performed by members of the Fire Brigade Corps. The sum of £57 7s 6d has been expended by the Association in paying for the men's time and horse hire and insurance. Fees amounting to £B2 3s 9d have been received by the Association from persons benefited who were able to pay. The Affiliation ha«. thirteen professional nurses on tlw> register. They keep the Secretary posted: as to their engagements, so that applicants can Le furnished without delay with the address of a nurse who is open" for engagement. . The Secretary has received letters from persons who have made use of the register, expressing satisfaction and praising the u.-cfulncss of the institution. In the leport regret is expressed at the death of the late Dr J. Irving, and appreciation of h : s sen-ices is recorded. With regard to the despatch of nurses by the Lincolnshire to South Africa in January, 1900, the report says:—"As 'is now well known, there was 'argent need for their serviCE"-. and their excellent outfit proved invaluab'e. The ample fund subscribed was of the utmo'-t importance, for a considerable time chipped before the nurses received their pay from the Imperial frovcrnment: Tlley were able to supply themselves and patients with comforts that would otherwise have been impossible."
