HOISTING THE FLAG.
FEND ALTON .SCHOOL. The ceremony of hoisting the flag was performed at the Fendalton School on Thursday afternoon, in the presence of a large number of spectators, children, parents and friends. 'Mr S. Bullock, head-master, in addressing the assembly, said there had been no school treat or prize-giving last year ; the children had given up the money generally devoted to that purpose to the War Fund, and the thought .of that self-denial made the treat now all the more -enjoyable.; A letter from the Mayor of Christohurch, thanking the children for their self-denial, had been framed and hung up in the -schoolroom, and would ever remind the children in the .future of their predecessors’ noble action. The New Zealand flag was then run up by the four smallest girls m the school, while cheers were given by the assembly. _ Mr E. G. Sstayeley referred in eulogistic terms to the action of the children in giving up their treat to the Canterbury War Fund. The school was indebted to the old boys for the gift of the flag, and to him ir- was a most pleasing feature to see the -interest the old boys took in the school, He dwelt on the history of the British flag and its significance throughout the Empire ns the emblem of justice and freedom. He had only to mention names like Roberts and Kitchener, -,or Qo-rdon, Nelson and Co-Uingwood, to recall to their memory at once the great deeds performed under the grand old flag. A verse of the National ‘Anthem and cheers for the ' King and the flag terminated the ceremony. Tea was then served out to the children and visitors, after which children’s races were run.
