Some residents rendered ‘‘first aid” by putting the ■injured shaft in splints. Another start was made hut the horse proving fractious -a resident drove the ladies home. When the old New Brighton Road Bridge was reached the horse again jibbed, breaking the repaired shaft again. .The difficulty this time was gob over by splicing a willow sapling to the shaft end with flax and the journey was completed without further mishap.
