ROAD BOARDS.

AY ON. A meeting cif the Avon Road Board was held on Monday 'last; present —Mr A. B. Morgan (chairman), Messrs M. Hawken, J. Dunlop. I. Parish and E. Spencer. Mr j.. M. Rowe, Rangiora, wrote offering to supply the Board with thirty-inch concrete pipes. Consideration of the matter was held oyer. Mr G. Sands wrote asking the Board to. lower a culvert under M’Saveney’s Road on his frontage. Mr Hawken and the Clerk were empowered to deal with the matter. Mr J. Grant wrote offering to fill up gullies on the New Brighton Road for the sum of £6 10s. Messrs Parish, Dunlop and the Clerk were appointed to inspect the proposed work and report. The Drainage Board made an offer of commission on collection of drainage rates of 3J,- per cent. The’ Board resolved to accept this, and to ask that the 1 per cent retained on last yearns rates should ,bs .paid. Mr J. Richards asked, and was iigran(!ed, permission to place a bridge over the.side-channel in Papanui. Mir MurrayAynsley, the. Board’s engineer, reported •with reference to the sa’ud and shingle delivered for the concrete work at Papanui, that he had given the contractors notice to .stop'delivery, and had arranged to obtain material from Mr W. Chapman. A deputation, consisting of Messrs Harrison, Marriott, Wood, King and Small, representing the, ratepayers of Travis’s Swamp, Availed on The, Board, to ask that something shonld.be .done to give them a better outlet from the properties occupied by them. It was resolved that the owners of the land fronting on the tram line should be 1 interviewed, and 1 that they should be requested to meet Mr Brightling and : the Board, ' and try to arrange for. a road on the tram-line. The Surveyor reported that the. bridge on the North Avon Road required repairs to the decking. This was ordered to be done. The bridge at the junction of Preston’s and Wal-1 . ten’s Roads was ordered to be taken but and replaced by a box culvert, wider than the •present bridge. The finance report showed that receipts since last meeting were £557 7s 6d. Accounts on the general account amounting to £453 2s Bd, and on the loan account £429 9s 3d, were passed for payment, and the Boat’d rose. MANDEYILLE AND RANGIORA. The monthly meeting cf the Board was held on Friday; present—Messrs F. Hcrrell (chairman), C. Leech and J. Stalk-. ,'er. ' Tha Clerk's and 1 Inspector of Slaughter-houses reports were read and adopted. The 'Secretary of Agriculture wrote that the Government would take over the inspection of slaughterhouse from April 1, .and in view of this it was decided to give the Board’s inspector a month’s notice. Permission was given Mr W. H. Little to erect a verandah over the footpath opposite his shop in Woodend. An offer from Mr Mokcmcko to rent the three, .’small islands between .the Cam River and the road, was accepted, the rent. 15s per year, to be paid in. advance. A letter was read from the Oxford Read Board expressing the opinion that the apportionment of the cost of maintaining ’White’s Bridge by the Road Boards the Aj-rilf.ey .County which paid 67 per cent Of the tola’ cost, was most unfair, and that the City , of Christchurch and boroughs escaped- payment. The present time was '•mort . opportune to have the , question re-opened, and a more equitable allocation made. The Board’s opinion coinciding, it was decided to suggest that a meeting -of the- Road Board® interested be convened at an- early date in Rangiora, to discuss the • matter. The receipts for the month were reported to bs £64 5s lid, end the bank debit balance £342 11s 4d, Accounts amounting to £143 12s 5d mere passed for payment.
