An Auckland gentleman, who has been visiting the West Coast, describes the district as follow* :—“ From the Karamea River in the north to the Ha-ast River in.the south of the West Coast of :h e Middle Island there 1 is a, stretch of 300 miles of alluvial deposit which has been proved, more or. less by former methods -to contain hold, and which hasyiejded .nearly £19,003,000 from 1857 lo cho ohd o£ .1899..'. ..Much.,.oi. the, ground .previously worked 'cah' be "gone' ‘Over again 1 and' worked at: •ii greater depth,, Gian was practicable -without the aid of a modem dredge, and it is known in many cases that I , good gold was left under
foot; but in the good old tin.*;?. i,b<7 l.watax. ’ . difficulty made it impossible to get down to.: any depth wiiefe: the hea vicr goitl should 'bo* found. Nowadays a dredge can easily workto. a.depth of 40ft belt tv the surface o( ilia water. The prevailing opinion .is drat- tire' West Coast claims' are -.richer thin ;those (if Otago, but at the same nine owing to the. wildness of the Country more difficulties ;wiU? b® encountered it: order-to win - the’ pi.ectsasi matal.” Tlte secretary of the Reeves’ Proprietary Gold-Dredging Company (Mr H. A. Bruce) received a telegram from the clredgrtiiost-er’- -IrKa last evening stating that he had iva-hed .up 7o:s 13dvvt for 99 hours’ dredging. A meeting, of the directors of, the Hokitika Gold Dredging Company was held yerUiday afternoon, at the office of the secretary (Mr it'.) Rollitt),. and Mr J. Tough was appointad' master of the -company's dredge. Heavy rains have fallen on the West Coast, and yesterday the weather was showery. Tha Grey River is as yet unaffected, butt if therein-continues-work will he interrupted on tiieGrey dredges. ‘ i "A Reeffcou syndicate has -taken "up- a Ursa area -at Napoleon Hill, near Onvc-il Creek.- with , the indention of, opening up a sluicing (? Ja: irs, ’ and has applied for eleven "miles'of water-race, from Lande’H's Crc-ek to the lop of NapoleonHill. • In 1872 Napoleon Hill -was vhe- centre-of. a “ rush,” and large quantities of gold were taken from this. famous ground. Up t’ll ihe present -time tunneCing has been carried onwith satisfactory results. About -seventy tons of machinery have aniv-.. ed at Greymouth for the -Orwell Creek dredge. The Maori Gully claim is being extensively bored, with a view" to the -letting of confrv.ou, for the' construction of -a dredge. ,The- ; claim , was one of the well-known spots 'in The" early-’ days, and some good gold has been obtaiircifrom the creek. . - - -, ' The'broker‘for the Riley’s Beach’ ComiMyhy; reporta 111 u-t the share list is neony ctil-1. -Theshares were -only placed on the mari.a,. oil Weclnckday. • ’ J The L'eviaihan Freehold Company, whose property adjoins that of the. A Wert Coast- exchange-states that a party of gentlemen interested in the. Maori -Gudy Company visited the claim during the week, and all were most favourably impressed- with the lease The rumour circulated that- there was no extent of dredgable ground proved to be false, as 1 a ’ better dredging ground would be hard..to find.. The.prospects got from this claim are very encouraging.* -Tha foundry has the work of building the dredga in hand. , , ... ■ The Greenstone dredges will commence, operations in a- very short time. The Greenstone Creek is expected to be the first, and then the Greenstone Junction and Thiee-imla will follow. Only for the delay in arrival of machinery, work would have been further advanced. ' The secretary pf t)je Red Jack’s Gold Dredging Company (Air <3. ,S. Simpson) has received reports from the engineers, Messrs Cullen Bros., stating that good headway' is being made with the dredge.! '.The pontoon contractor, Mr‘M’Lu'skie, is engaged plankuig the-sid’a of the pontoon.- Some of-the machinery has! been delivered, and over 20 lons are. lying at/ Ngaliere. The Chinamen working the portion recently sold to the company, • will. give up possession on Monday-nest. They have been earning good wages there, and while eight were occupied -wheeling away the -top stuff, 'four were constantly ’ engaged washing -the' bottom, though gold is distributed throughout the dirt. The .properly is..considered one: of the best of its kind, on the coast, and 'West Coast exchanges--state -that -the company has a good future in ■ .-store.•
