The ordinary meeting of the Cusb Literary Institute mis hf-ld Monday evening ; present—'Messrs H. W. Cooper (in the chair), Seurcll, Early, Henderson, J. Forbes; Stewart, C. B. Forbes and HassalJ. A discussion followed on the best means of augmenting the income of the Institute, and >!; was agreed to accept an offer made by Mr Scarell under certain conditions, to provide two entertainments. The Council of the Canterbury Horticultural Society he'd a meeting at its office on Wednesday evening. The -chair was taken by Mr B.■ Heat bn Rhodes (president). A report was read from the Executive Committee on. tlie work done during the past three mouths., Messrs A. E. Lowe (chairman) and E. C.. Da-un (honorary secretary) explained the arrangements made for the Winter Show with the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. A resolution was then passed approving of the action of the Executive. The Treasurer read a- financial statement, which showed that the society was in a solvent condition. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Waimate Horticultural Society, asking what form the society would like, the trophy won by it at the Jubilee show to take. The prize schedule for the classes,:’! the society’s section of the Winter Shew was laid on the table, the amount allotted being £4O, exclusive of £3 3s presented by Mr Heaton Rhodes for special prizes and £1 Is given by Mrs Heaton J’hode>. It was decided to write to the Koval 'Horticultural Society for copies of rules for judging, with a, view- to their adoption. A resolution was passed, approving of the Hohrvary Secretary’s action in accepting the c..i'er of a silver “Daffodil Cup’’ from Messrs Karr and Sou, of London, and it was decided that a letter should be written asking the donors to alter one of the conditions for the competition. The President road a letter he had received .from the Dunedin 'Horticultural Society, giving particulars of the Horticultural Conference to be held there m May 21, and asking the society to appoint delegates. Messrs James Gray, A. E. Lowe and hi. Murphy were appointed to reprc'l v 'ot the society. A meeting of the Lancashire Society was held on Wednesday evening. The President (Mr Gibbs) was in the chair. A pleasant evening war occupied with Lancashire readings and folk lore. The next meeting will be a musical evening, and ladies and friends of members will be invited to be present. The Sccrciary announces that-arrange-ments have betii made to meet the Yorkshire Society, at the'rooms of the latter, for a card tournament., on Feb. 25.
