I ■ . The 1 Grey River dredge is to be shifted up stream,'as the present working site is full of sunken timber. After the boring experiments have been completed on the Grey Monarch Company’s claim the ' construction of a dredge will be commenced. v .The dredging boom on the West Coast, says a northern paper,' is proving of some advantage to Auckland at the. present time, owing to the demands for kauri timber, to be used in the construction, of dredges. The schooner CJydje sailed for Grey mouth recently with a ’ large quantity of timber for dredge-building. This is the second cargo shipped to the West Coast port, within the past few months, and it is probable that other shipments will follow. At present Messrs G. Fraser and .Sous 1 and Messrs Seagar Brothers, have in hand two large dredges for, the south, which will brt sent -away- this month. [ The following have, been appointed directors of the Auckland Lead Dredging Company: Messrs J. Kelman, R. Ross, G. Spencer and D. M’Math, of Alexandra, and Messrs Gardiner, Wilson and Davidson, of Greymouth. Mr H .A Bruce, the manager of the Alpha Gold Mining Co., Preservation Inlet, has received advice from the. mine manager to the effect that' the battery crushed 208 tons stone for a return of 740 z 13dwt lOgr gold. Wages amounted to £39 ss, representing sixteen working days. Mr J., Kihnan, ,a dredging expert. from Alexandra South, visited the. Ninety-mile Reach yesterday, and has expressed himself highly’ pleased with the-prospects there.’ He inspected the ground .in the vicinity of the Rakaia River and stated that the Beach was an ideal ground for dredging, but before a dredge was put on, the ground should be extensively bored. If the same uniform results were obtained from deep boring as had- been from surface prospecting and primitive boring experiments, a dredge putting , through eighty loads- an hour would obtain 40oz per week.

The Maerewhenua dredge, the pioneer of the Wait Ski'dredging claims, has, after some initial difficulties, started work, and is expected to wash up in a week’s time. Considerable interest attaches to the dredge's work, as upon ils success or otherwise depends in a : great measure the future of the Waitaki: field. ■ : ■

The Charlton Creek Company., lias,, declared a. dividend..(tlie eighth) .of is per share.,. . * The first" annual' general meeting of shareholders • of- ih& ! British? ■•■.Ejbp’ Company.' was held at Dunedin on Wednesday, when a pioposal that the contracts should be transferred to a claim on the West Coast was reiacvad

and future procedure was left to the discretion of the directors. The Mokoia dredge has resumed .'work and latest advices from’ the Coast asste taat.tho : machinery is running smoothly. ... The “ Otago Daily. Times” states that the chairman of .directors of the Golden Elbow. Dredging Company (-Mr J. H. Haucfsvt), whp has been-on a visit to the West Cor-st, reported at Wednesday’s meeting that- in passing through Christchurch ho had visited the; foundry of the contractor, Mr .Tchn* Anderson, when be found that not so much, progte/# had been made with the machinery as they, had been led to believe. ' The gearing, screen,'' ladder, buckets, and connecting links were reported to be in a forward state, and all the work is being pushed through as expeditiously as possible. The directors aro making every effort to get the dredge completed so as .to get in at -the lowest winter level, : A Dunedin exchange report®, that, Mr T.' M’ Oracken, broker, has placed on the market that well-known claim the Riley’s Beach-; This claim was worked for a short timb by' the little Alpine dredge with excellent results, as high a return as 2060 z having been obtained in one week. The little dredge was, however,., totally unfit to cope with the Heavy wash and depth of gold-bearing gravel. A modern dredge is to be placed on the claim, when large returns are looked for. The claim is -so well and favourably known that within thirty-six hours ,of issuing the .prospectus nearly 3000 shares were applied for.
