CANTERBURY ATHLETIC AND - CYCLING CLUB. OPENING OF NEW ROOMS." The Canterbury A. and C.C., which recently acquired the premises formerly known as the Y.AI.C.A. Buildings, but since named the City Hall, held* a “ social ” last evening, to commemorate the club’s removal to the new rooms. There was a numerous gathering of members, and representatives of various sports. The large social hall upstairs, in which the entertainment took place, was tastefully decorated with patriotic flags and Chinese lanterns. Air J. H. Parker, president of the club, occupied the chair. In proposing the toast of “ the Canterbury A. and C.C.” Air E. E. Daniels referred with pleasure to the remarkable progress the club had made during its comparatively brief existence. He congratulated the members on the possession of the commodious premises wdiich they now occupied. The President, in reply, said- those who had been responsible for the conduct of the club since its inception deserved high approbation. Finding the rooms in Gloucester Street inadequate for tbei rapidly increasing membership the committee had looked for other rooms, and had: been fortunate in securing premises which were second to none in the colony, and probably in Australasia', as a cycling clubhouse. They had a large social hall, lofty billiard and readingrooms, lavatories, offices, and a finely equipped gymnasium. He thought-the outside public scarcely appreciated the good such a club as the Canterbury A. and C.C. was doing in the town in fostering -a love of healthy .sport, and a- spirit of ■emulation which must- always tend to bring out the best qualities in our young men. It was undoubtedly the love of colonials for athletics and sports of various kinds which .had--developed in them the material as fighters which had earned for them such kudos in South Africa.

Other toasts honoured were “ The King,” “Cycling,” proposed by Air E. E. Daniels, responded to by Messrs J. E. Green (Pioneer A.B. and A. 0.), J. Burgess (Christchurch C.C.), G.-Alably (Union C.C.); “Kindred Sports,” proposed by Air T. Clarkson, responded to by Alessrs J. Al’Clurg (hockey), J. C. Sibbaid (swimming), F. Crosbie (rowing), D. J., Fraser (football), J. Kennedy (athletics), W. Pearce (cricket), Buchanan and A. Murray (tennis) “ Our Boys at the Front,” proposed- by AIr“G. Hart, responded to by Sergeant Wilkinson; “ The Ladies,” proposed by Mr Lees, responded to by H. Strange. During the evening an excellent musical programme was contributed by members and friends.
