PUBLIC HEALTH.

■ TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In your leader on the a Dove subject you say " that the Mayor of Linwood spoke as if the administration of the Act entirely rested with the Government.” I should like to correct such an impression, and! say that I am fairly well acquainted with the provisions of the Act, and on Dr Mason’s circular being read to the Council expressed my satisfaction that the Government had seen the wisdom of allowing local bodies to appoint their own medical officers and supervise the health of the district. Further, that the Government had not; persevered in its original intention of setting up a Central Board of Health to entirely overide local authority. The setting up of a Board for such purpose had evidently been contemplated to judge from speech of a Cabinet Minister during the plague scare. I also expressed the opinion that unless the local bodies , made strong representations the Government would probably experience a relapse in> the matter of public health, and consequently the appointment, of district health officers hung up, hence, the resolution of my Council.—l am, etc., FRED. BOARD. Linwood, Feb. 13.
