JUBILEE MEMORIAL COMMITTEE.

• SUGGESTED SITES FOR THE STATUE. j THE SUBSCRIBERS TO BE COS- , SUITED. A meeting of the Jubilee Memorial and Finance Committee was .held in the City Council Chambers yesterday afternoon; present—The Mayor (in the chair), and Messrs Sorensen, Wigrain, Gapes, Ell, M.H.R., and the Mayor of Sydenham. Apologies were received frcta the Mayor of Woolstom and Mr G. G. Stead. The Mayor -said that the New Zealand Shipping Company's manager, Mr Isaac Gibbs, had written, stating that his company would carry the memorial from London to Lyttelton free of charge. It was decided to write acknowledging the kindness' of the New Zealand 'Skipping Company. The Mayor said he had also communicated with the Agent-General on the subject of the memorial. The chief object of the meeting was to devise means for raising the balance of the funds necessary to, carry uot the Ml intentions of the committee in regard to the memorial. The Mayor favoured going on with at least the statue as soon as possible, and if need be, leaving the other part of the memorial for a future time when funds should be available. Some discussion took place on the best means of canvassing. Those present favoured the block system,' by which the city would be divided into little districts and these apportion ed to canvassers. ' Mr Sorensen said -liis difficulty had been in getting a colleague. Re had, with one colleague, gone over one-half of his block, but the remainder had not been visited. Mr Ell volunteered to assist Mr Sorensen, and the offer was accepted. The Mayor said the city had not yet been j fully canvassed, and if this were thoroughly done he thought-the balance of the funds necessary would be obtained. There was a sum of nearly £BOO -available, but about £2OOO in all would be necessary to'complete the memorial, statue, pedestal,, and: relief. It was thought that the large manufacturing establislimerits should be, visited, and the Friendly Societies; written to-. In regard to the latter, it was suggested that a night might be devoted to the work ,by each" Lodge. Entertainments might be given and funds collected by the friendly societies as well as. such societies as the Masonic and Caledonian. Some of those.present had experienced difficulty in getting-subscriptions m the country, many not realising that the movement was provincial .and not a parochial one. ■ - ' . After some discussion, it was decided tt> write the Friendly Societies as suggested, and to call a meeting of the subscribers at an early date, with the object of consulting them as to the best means «f raising the necessary balance. The Mayor said the question of site was one that would have to be dealt .with. It had been suggested by one old resident to place her Majesty's statue where that - of Mr J. R- Godley now stood, and 1 to flank the Royal statue with those of Mr Godley and Mr W. S. Moorhouse. This suggestion had b ee n mad 8 'V Mr J " M " He^vood - Other suggestions were made to erect the statue m Market Square, opposite the Grain Agency Buildings, in Latimer or Cranmer Square. . ■ - • The Mayor pointed out that the cabstands were none too commodious for the traffic now, and it would be well to bear that fact in mind. He space in. front of the Council Buildings was also suggested, as well as the triangle in front of the City Hotel. Eventually, the following sites were decided upon as suitable to submit to the meeting of subscribers: —The site of the Godley statue, with the re-adjustment suggested ; the, Market Square site; the site L front of the City Council Buildings, on the recently laid-out grounds; the space infront of the Grain Agency Buildings, and the space in front of the City Hotel.
