SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENTS IN HIGH STREET.

AN UNSIGHTLY SPOT. A LETTER TO THE CITY COUNCIL. At last night's .meeting of the City Council a letter was read from several ratepayers in High Street, drawing the attention of the Council to several improvements necessary in that part of High Street from Lichfield Street to Madras Street, The letter stated that the channelling was very 'defective, and that the asphalt crossing from, the late Mr Noding's corner to A. J. White's was in a very bad state. The writers suggested that the water tarak should be converted into an underground- tank, as in its present' state it was unsightly,' being full of dirty and almost stagnant water. They suggested that a, handsome stone pedestal should be erected over the underground tank or in th« middle of the triangular space, surmounted by oti-e or more powerful lamps. This would assist in lighting up that dark part of Tua-m Street, between Manchester and High Streets which was at present, owing to the darkness, the resort of bad characters. The writers further suggested that the open space should be levelled, and tarred, and that the street should be better lighted from one end to the. other. '". The fact that a number of substantial buildings had recently been erected in the vicinity, and that a number of otHfers were to be built, made the reform the more necessary. >•; The letter was'referred to the Works Committee for consideration and report.
