—v h •A meeting of the Council of the New Zea-} land Institute of Journalists was held in the " Press" Office on Saturday last. The Pre- : sident reported that he had further communicated with the English Institute, on the subject of affiliation, and submitted a circular, which was approved, to be sent to; newspaper' proprietor, placing before then* the nature and aims of the institute, a»d asking their co-operation, especially in tha matter of appointments to their literary. staffs. Mr W. H. Triggs tendered his re-sin-nation as treasurer, and this was accepted, and Mr W. Q. Atack, "Canterbury; Times," was elected to fill the vacancy. Oai the motion of the President,' seconded byj Mr Saunders, it was resolved—" That thiai Council, on behalf of the New Zealand In* stitute of. Journalists, begs to offer its respectful and hearty congratulations to the Hon Sir Robert Stout, late Hon Counsel to the Institute on his appointment as Chief Justice of New Zealand, and desires to place on record its high sense of the unrayingj kindness with which his distinguished abilities were always placed at the services of the Institute, in his capacity as its Honorary! Legal Adviser." It was resolved, on the re-; commendation of the'Bunedin Branch, to get the Libel Bill again introduced into ParJ iiaau-nt', and the Presidentwas requested tol communicate with Mr Carncross, M,H-R>-ij on the subject. It was also agrwd to forward to Mr Charles Wilson, the Chairman! of the Wellington Branch, a letter of con- ; gmtulation on' his appointment to the posi-i tioiii'ef Parliamentary Librarian.
