THE AUCKLAND EIRE.

[Pek Pbess Association.] AUCKLAND, Jan. 15. Further inquiry regarding the fire in Customs Street shows that the fire was discovered very soon alter the actual outbreak. There was no sign of fire at ten minutes to lour, when a cabman drove past the buildings, but a few minutes later a .night-watchman, with two constables, noticed a smell of burning. This they traced to Bond and Bell’s buildings, through the ground-floor of which a faint gleam was now showing. The delay which ensued at the telephones, caused by the failure of the central exchange to respond, is now being inquired into.
