Tha Shotover Quariz Mining Wmpanj has obtained the following favourable results from a sample of pyrites sent to the Otago School of Mines for assay:—Gold 14oz 16dwt 14gr per ton, silver 7dwt 19gr per ton. The " Otago Daily Times ” states that the directors of the Old Diggings Gold Dredging Company, Limited, have issued a circular to their shareholders in which they state that as a result of two bores made by the engineers, Messrs Cutten Bros., at different points of the claim, very satisfactory prospects were obtained. The bores show that prospects exist in the gravels right down to the bottom. Mr James M’Kay, of Inangahua Junction, a director of the company, who was .appointed by his co-directors to supervise the boring operations on behalf of the company, reports that the gold -is most uniformly distributed from top to bottom, and he is more convinced than ever that the Old Diggings will be the Hartley and Riley of the Duller. A dredge is to be procured as speedily as possible. A telegram from the West Coast received yesterday morning states that the rivers are falling, and the dredges, delayed on account of the height of the waters, are getting to work. _ There seems every prospect of work continuing uninterruptedly for this month. A private letter from Greymouth received in the city states that though mining affairs have been quiet on the West Coast, investors in the Grey Valley, Inangahua and Bullor properties are quietly buying up all available stock. February is expected to bo a record month for gold returns, and West Const people- confidently expect some big rises in dredging stock. The winch of the Ford’s Creek dredge has broken down. The damage was slight, and the dredgemaster hoped to have it repaired, and to wash up to-day. The Dome Creek dredge, which commenced operations on Jan. 9, is working smoothly, and giving every satisfaction.
