GREATER CHRISTCHURCH.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Tuesday’s indignation meeting was so ably, forcibly and discreetly designed, engineered and controlled by iiis Lordship Dr Grimes and by Mr O’Ooimor, who acted as secretary, that the City Council will, no doubt, accept a defeat which inflicts no dishonour upon them. Any attempt bo erect the proposed combination of buildings within the city area may now be dismissed as beyond the range of municipal politics. The morgue should certainly be centrally situated, and it is possible that less objection would have been shown to the Council's scheme had that part been made a separate propcsal. The city authorities can either utilize their reserves or purchase a section where thefe are no convenient householders to be incommoded. Residents near a sanitary reserve will, no doubt, strenuously oppose the construction of a destroyer in their neighbourhood; and their objection will have force if any houses were standing before the gazetting of the sanitary reservation. Even an isolated spot might be objected to by those passing along the nearest public road, and by others having to meet or live within sound or smell of the travelling corporation carts. But the fact remains that the Council is doing its duty in trying to safely dispose of refuse before the approach of some devastating disease. The mere breadth of a town belt will be no protection to those living near a pointed area, and the City Council (should bring about the amalgamation of the city and borough councils so that the suggested sanitary improvements may be comprehensively undertaken lor tbs benefit and .upon the responsibility of Greater Christchurch. —I am, etc., J. H. NEWLYN. June 27, 1900.
