MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.

The ■weekly, meeting ‘of the Lyttelton : Literary Society was held on Thursday evenrr>g, There was a large attendance, and Captain Maiming presided. The evening was occupied with the “Journal,” essays add letters on various subjects being read .by the Editor, Mrs M’Gregor. These were all interesting, and several were very entertaining. They covered a wide range of sub-jects-rthe railways, patriotism, war, courtesy, Barry Pain’s writings, “ Things a Mam Cannot Do,” “What’s in a Name,” tattooing, colonial ; characteristics and cycling. . Winter, on behalf of the Hail ' Committee,, his' 'half-yearly re-port,-which was received. The election of officers for the ensuing term resulted as follows Pox Hall Committee, P.G.’s Brcs H. E. Robbins and T. J. Arohbold (re-elected); auditor, Bro H. E. Rcbbins (re-elected); for N.G., Bro W. H. Rose; Y.G., Bro. L. L. Shaw. The Prov, G.M., ■ on behalf of the district-, and Sister Pearce, - on behalf of the' Sister Pearce Lodge, -responded to the Third Sentiment. The receipts for the evening were £407 9s 4d. v' : .' A circular was also received from the Clerk cf the Christchurch City ’ Council with regard ,to the Indian Famine Relief Fund, and it was decided to hold a “ social ” in aid of the fund in the Oddfellows’ Hall, on July 4. A committee consisting of Bros J. Fitzpatrick, J. H. Timms, A. Newman, J. E. Moore, A. Boyce, A. M. Daiziel, and G. A. M’Lean was appointed to arrange details. The electicn of officers resulted as follows: —G.M., Bro B. Namara; N.G., Bro A. M. Daiziel; V.G., Bro C. Fitzpatrick; E.S., Bro J. Fitzpatrick. The receipts for the evening. amounted to £3B 13s ; fid, and the expenditure to £ls 15. The monthly meeting of. No. 1 No .Surrender Loyal Orange Lodge was held in the Orange Hall on Thursday evening, when the President. wap in the'chair. There was a good attendance of members. The change in the' programme for Twelfth of July celebrations and tEe proposal to give the children, of the Order a treat to themselves in the Orange Hall .were discussed. Sister Foster premised to read a paper on “ Home ■ Influence ” at next meeting. After the business hud been transacted, the meeting was opened to visitors, and Bro Sloan read a paper 0n..“ Protestantism,” for which he received a vote of thanks. After refreshments had been partaken of, and a recitation had been given by Sister Foster, the meeting was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem. ' ’ ■
