ATHIETICS IN SCHOOLS.
The.special committee set up hy the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association.to'; consider the 'question' of establishing a Pub-' lie Schools Athletic Association, met on! Wednesday evening j, .present Messrs P. Selig (chairman), C. Hood-Williams,-J. "W'.. Johnston and F. T. Evaas. : The - Clhairnmn reported having .interviewed the Chairman of the North Canterbury' Board of Education, Mr T; S." Weston, with respect to the movement. ' The; draft of the letter to be forwarded, to the Board of Education was adopted. The Chairman also reported that the Mayor was in Wellington, but wa.3 ex-J pected to return shortly, when he would wait .upon \hm y as arranged, with resp&ci to a suggestion to take part in the Jubilee' celebrations. It was decided to ' send to the masters, of the educational district of North Canterbury a copy of; the; letter to the Board ■of and a cinailar letter, inviting the masters to meet .the committee in conference on July 13,- -at 8 p.ni. It. was stated that after the ,objecis of the New; Zealand Amateur Athletic Association were explained at this meeting, it wouli be for the masters to take steps to set .up. the Association, which,- affiliated to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, as in Sydney -and elsewherey-would no dloubtf oe officered for Jthe most part by members from "the "different educational instatjutions. '. It was-also stated that one object of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was to see the Public Schools Asaxaa-' tion movement, started on a sound basis. When established, it would, doubtless, <& ixn other places, hold its annual athletic meeting for the children, the Jubilee celebrations afiording a capital opportunity to initiate the movement with a mass gatheri;ag of ths school children in patriotic display.
