SOCIETY OF ARTS.
Th ;i annual conversazione of the Canterbury Society of Arts was held at the Art Gallery last night, -and was well attended. Songs were sung by Miss Graham and Mr March, and a pianoforte solo was played by Mr L. Lewin. In the exhibition, which was a very good one, the work of the young artists was a prominent feature. Besides the pictures there was an interesting collection of industrial and decorative art works, comprising pottery, glassware, porcelain, brasswork and. wrought iron work. A new feature was the historical collection of illustrations of painting, sculpture, and architecture, lent and chronologically arranged by Mr S. H. Seager. . The President, in his opening remarks, said that the collection was an extremely valuable; one from an educational point of view, and he hoped that members would give it- the study it deserved. The exhibition was, on the whole, very artistically arranged; and the room was tastefully decorated with pot plants, and so. forth. The President congratulated the Society upon the success it had achieved, and said he hoped l that the excellence of the exhibition would) induce many lovers of art to become subscribing members of the society.
