20th Century" Star.” Made by the Eadie Manufacturing Co., Limited, England. Mechanical Combination ot Fork-Sides and; Adjacent Parts which Ensure Safety. ; The most debated point in cycle engi-' neering practice during the past few years has been the essential necessity of pre-; venting the breakages owing to severe' shocks and crystallisation of the metal, which have from time to time occurred at : or near the front fork crown. , - Numerous devices have been adopted by experimentalists to ensure safety to thej rider by strengthening' the plqte fork • crown and adjacent parts. So faiylipw--ever, their efforts have, met with’but. par : tial success, for the simple reason, that the-, policy, adopted has been to increase the ■: amount of metal in a given area Without’a; corresponding increase in the strength of ; J allied members. ' • . f The Efidie Manufacturing Company, indesigning the 20th century “ Star, ’ has' adopted what is believed to be the only, correct solution —namely, that of relieving’ the threatened area of as much strain as possible. The manner by which this has been’ accomplished is clearly indicated by the accompanying illustrations of the 20th. century “ Star ” registered design for front forks and crown. It will be observed that the fork .crown itself is given form as to enable it to most effectively resist the peculiar strains to which this component part is subjected. . . Strength of Pork Crown. Despite its great resisting capacity, however, to torsional and other strains, the crown is light and does not interpose a. heavy- mass of metal between forks and steering tube, with a consequent concentration of breaking strains. : It will be seen from the sectional drawing that the principle of the double-plate crown is retained, with the addition of. a hollow box machined from a solid forging, which covers the two plates and forks. It is this box which affords the great resistance to the torsional or twisting strain before referred to. Vibration Distributed. In order to distribute any vibratory shocks* which may pass the fork crown as effectively as possible, it will be observed that the steering tube is tapered from the bottom to a point considerably beyond the danger point. The advantages associated with the points, indicated above are obvious to even a superficial student of cycle construction. It is, however, to,the form and section of the fork-sides that the reader’s attention is more directly required. It is ip this particular that the new pattern 20th Century Star has a radical and unique improvement, calculated to reduce all possible chances of failure to an irreducible minimum. . Unique Pork Sides. The section at the fork crown at the top is D, which section has been proved to ensure in a greater degree than any other that lateral stability so essential to the fore part of a cycle. , The important feature in reference to the design is that the tube, instead of retaining the D section throughout its length, merges some five inches from the bottom into round. This fact does not in the slightest degree detract from the lateral stability of the forks, but it does provide for- a certain limited vertical deflection within the natural elasticity of the material, which , absolutely removes any possibility of the ' vibratory shocks from the road being concentrated in and around the crown. , - s -■ - The fork’s are furnished with a bold' curve, which is found to give the machine a considerable amount of “ life.” On the rough roads the spring of the well curved 20th Gentuiy Star forks reduces the vibration on the crown, frame and handle bare; so much so, that the machine seems _to lift over the bumpy road, without checking the pace. Tests Justify Anticipations. This fork has received the fullest investigation at the hands of mechanical experts and experienced riders, with the result that the makers are fully convinced that the hitherto weakest portion of all cycles has been placed beyond reproach in the 20th century “ Star.’-’ In order that no refinement should be lacking, machined lugs have been fitted to the fork ends in place of the ordinary swaged ends. This refinement not only adds to the rigidity and mechanical finish of the machine, but also ensures a longer life for the front wheel cones, as the sain© are drawn up to a true face instead of to the uneven surface presented by the usual style of swaged fork end. 20th Century Pedals. ...... 20th Century Detachable Chain Wheels. 20th Century Chain Adjuster. 20th Century Finish.
