THE RIVAL CABLES.

AUSTRALIAN PRESS COMMENT. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, March 23. The “ Sydney Morning Herald,” in a leader, says that there seems to be an attempt to raise*rivalry between the Pacific and Cape cables on lines which will make the construction of the one exclusive of the other. It agrees with the Chamber of Commerce, that there is not much fear that the Pacific cable will be relinquished, or any step taken which will postpone or prevent its realisation. If the reasons for the Pacific cable are strong, those in favour of the Cape cable are not less favourable. We must see that no limit is set to the rival enterprise, whether governmental, private, or foreign. Every increase in cable communication is a gain to Australia. We may be sure, if the Pacific cable is desirable, the opposition of the Cape cable will not prevent it any more than the existing service.
